[Editor's note: From November 1-3 at the SMX Convention Center Aura, celebrate the best of J-Culture – from manga and anime to J-Pop and cosplay – at Coslandia 2019. Below is their press release.]

MANILA, Philippines – Hallohallo Entertainment Inc. gears up to bring Coslandia 2019 for the second time on November 1, 2 and 3, 2019 at SMX Convention Center Aura in Taguig City.

This year, the ultimate J-Culture festival will gather the best of everything Japanese from J-Pop idols, cosplay, anime, manga, e-sports, and games.

After gaining positive feedbacks from last year’s kick-off, Coslandia together with Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, World Cosplay Summit (WCS) Philippines, and Pop Culture Hiroshima (PCH) Philippines will level it up this year by bringing a wider array of activities and attractions – such as idols’ mini-concerts, cosplay competitions, anime live viewing, games, exciting booths, exclusive merchandise and more.

The jam-packed lineup will be headlined by international and local J-Pop idols such as Samero, Amatsusora, 1-Girls, Fairytale, Gracorex, Hazuki, Tomoka, Filipino-Japanese artist Hirotoshi “TJ” Maeda, World Cosplay Summit Philippines’ official mascot Pastel Mix, and MNL48 – the Filipino sister group of Japan’s renowned AKB48 and the official performers of the Coslandia theme song.

As one of this year’s event partners, PCH Philippines will present guest cosplayers from PCH Team Philippines and will bring its first NCR Qualifiers for the upcoming Pop Culture Hiroshima (which is one of the biggest pop culture conventions and cosplay competitions held annually in Japan). Winners will get the chance to fly to Hiroshima and compete in the finals in April 2020.

There will be solo cosplay competitions – with themes “Armor and Cloth” and “Hero and Heroine” – and a Halloween costume contest for kids courtesy of WCS Philippines.

Additionally, solo Japanese cosplayer Miku 16 will also be attendance to perform skits and share her skills with the crowd.

There also a lot in store for manga fans as Coslandia will bring the people behind the live-action movie adaptation of the hit manga series Seikimatsu Blue. Manga creator Shintaro Hirota, film director Tetsuya Hashi, and cast members MNL48 Abby, Coleen, Brei and Kay, will be present for a special appearance and an exclusive sneak peek.

New attractions will also excite movie buffs and anime fans as, with the help of participating sponsors such as Philippine film distributor Pioneer Films, Coslandia will open a free screening of high-grossing tearjerkers Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name, Yoshitoki Ōima’s A Silent Voice, and Naoshi Arakawa’s Your Lie in April. Telesuccess Productions Inc., on the other hand, will screen the action-packed film Mazinger Z: Infinity.

Guests will also get meet, greet and pose with Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel, Rilakkuma and Pikachu, and watch the Coslandia Girls Collection sashay their way through the catwalk with Japan’s trendiest fashion.

For those who wish to flare up their artistic skills, Coslandia’s participating sponsor, Creative Nation Academy (which is a premiere Adobe training center in the Philippines), will drop by Coslandia to give an introduction to Adobe Creative Suite and the basics of Animation.

Furthermore, Coslandia’s silver sponsor Brother Philippines will also provide quality merchandise for event-goers via a RapidShots360 Video Booth.

With a few more days to count, there are still more announcements and surprises ready to reveal in the coming days so make sure to gear up, tag your friends along, and brace yourselves for an experience one for the books.

Tickets are available at SM Tickets outlets nationwide or via this link.

MANILA, Philippines – “This is way bigger than any of us within this room. Today is about a movement –a bold ambition with a humble mission – to change the saving behavior of Filipino people.” With these words, GCash Assistant Vice President for Financial Services Kim Seng opened the launch of mobile wallet brand GCash’s newest campaign, #LetsSaveTogether.

The event was held last October 10 at Manila House, Bonifacio Global City. Key influencers, brand ambassadors such as television host Robi Domingo, as well as select individuals from industries such as advertising, medicine, and law, all gathered to share their own stories of financial mistakes and their own inability to save.

#PlsSaveMe

According to the World Bank’s 2017 Global Findex Database, 66% of Filipinos do not have any formal savings account.

A week before the launch event, GCash sparked conversations online by urging netizens to share their own financial woes via the hashtag #PlsSaveMe.

OPENING ADDRESS. GCash AVP for Financial Services Kim Seng talks about changing the conversation.

“Just like any problem, the first step to change is acceptance,” said Seng. “When we open the gates of acceptance, then people become less shy to talk about saving. [Talking about] money problems become less of a taboo.”

Via online conversations, which led social media abuzz, GCash aimed to illustrate how this reality when it comes to personal finance hits close to home for many Filipinos, no matter their situation in life.

“We took a risk and steered the conversation from just being about ‘why we should save’ and ‘how to save’ to understanding Filipinos when it comes to not saving,” Seng emphasized.

Various walks of life

Kailangan kasi paning-paniwala [I need to look believable]. Accessories, shoes, bags, etc.,” explained Lourdes Serrano, an actress who often plays dońa roles in local soap operas.

To her, her financial problems are a bit cyclical. Having to support her family on her own, especially with a child still in college, she has to audition for work regularly. And for her to win roles, she has to invest in looking the part. This leads to her depleting her savings.

SAVING WOES. Character actress Lourdes Serrano and criminal lawyer Atty. Maria Lucia Fernandez open up about their problems in saving.

Even with a career in law that looks seemingly lucrative, Atty. Maria Lucia Fernandez finds herself struggling with the same problems regarding saving.

“I never really had the opportunity to enjoy my early 20s. After college, I went straight to law school,” she said. “When I started earning, I think I got too excited. So, I traveled from one place to another. I never got to save what I earned at that time.”

Today though, Atty. Fernandez finds herself at a life stage where all her peers are starting to get married, have their own families, buy their own houses and cars. Now, she finds the need to grow up, even a little, and start saving. However, the struggle is still real, she says.

#LetsSaveTogether

“The good news is that it’s never too late to get in the habit of saving,” said Kim Seng. “We hope to be able to show Filipinos that it’s not too late to start on the journey to financial wellness and that there are modern, digital innovations that will enable them to achieve their financial goals.”

GCash’s campaign #LetsSaveTogether is a call to achieve financial wellness through the basic financial concept of saving. And to empower users to take better control of their finances, GCash is introducing a digital savings account available on their platform.

In partnership with digital-first Malaysian Bank CIMB, GCash lets users set aside money which can earn up to 12 times higher than current industry rates, without a minimum deposit or a required maintaining balance. All users need to open a savings account in GCash is one valid identification card.

PLEDGE BOARD. Event attendees vowed to practice saving in their own ways via a pledge board.

“Our country is known as the top mobile and Internet users in the whole world. With this latest feature, we are taking advantage of this situation by bringing basic financial concepts such as saving on a digital platform in order to empower more Filipinos,” said GCash president and chief executive officer Anthony Thomas.

SAVING PARTNERS. Partner organizations went up the stage to show their support for the campaign.

Just in time for World Savings Day on October 31, numerous companies and private groups from the private sector have pledged to support GCash’s initiative. Some partners include Shakey’s Philippines, FooDee Global Concepts, Bench, Memo Express, Sun Life, Ayala Land, Concentrix, Lalamove, Transportify, Quad X, and Globe.

Cebu-based firm and Qualfon and Davao-based Dok Alternatibo and Focus, Inc. Group have also joined in support.

From Luzon to Mindanao, get ready for a nationwide Oktoberfest celebration

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Oktoberfest has long embedded itself into the Filipino culture. Though originating from Germany, this annual celebration has been certified as an official Filipino fiesta by the Department of Tourism in 2005.

I, for one, celebrate my birthday in October. And, for as long as I can remember, October is one and the same as Oktoberfest. It’s just that my anticipation and excitement are heightened all the more because of the month-long celebration. To me, my birth month means nights out in town with close friends, good beer, and back-to-back OPM acts.

San Miguel Oktoberfest 2019

First debuted in 1982, San Miguel Oktoberfest is now the longest-running beer and music festival in the Philippines. Having started as a mere one-night-only event, Oktoberfest has grown exponentially through the decades. Now on its 37th year, Oktoberfest is running from August 23 until October 27 in multiple venues from Luzon to Mindanao.

Over 1,700 partner bars across the country will be running 5+1 bucket promos every Monday to Thursday during this period. You get 1 free bottle for every 5 bottles purchased of any San Miguel brand.

On weekends, head to the parties in participating bars and bring home limited-edition San Miguel Oktoberfest’s merchandise collection — such as shirts, tote bags, bucket hats — while enjoying games, raffles, live OPM bands, and DJ acts.

Media networks – such as Tiger 22 Radio (the network behind Play FM, Magic, and Wave), Jack TV, MBC, and RMN Radio – will also be taking part in the festivities by organizing several Oktoberfest parties. These will be in metro hotspots such as Poblacion, Tomas Morato, McKinley Taguig, and Pasay, as well as key cities like Baguio, Cavite, Iloilo, and Davao. Popular organizers like Unknwn and Karpos Multimedia are also bringing Oktoberfest to the beaches of Siargao and La Union.

Want to know more about the destinations where you can celebrate San Miguel Oktoberfest this year? Here’s a mini-guide to the weekly Oktoberfest-themed events by location. You can get the Oktoberfest Merch Collection in all these locations too!

Metro Manila

If you regularly pass by Katipunan, chances are you’ve seen this quirky looking open-air mall.

Photo from The Pop Up’s FB page

Made entirely out of container vans, The Pop Up is located at the corner of Katipunan and Xavierville. The area houses restaurants of various cuisines, clothing boutiques, bars, and even a Korean grocery.

At the other end of C-5 road, in BGC, there’s also another partner venue for Oktoberfest. Fort Street (the new name of the iconic Fort Strip)will also be holding Oktoberfest events for the months of September to October. As is Greenfield District Central Park in Mandaluyong.

For those closer to the south, there is Victory Food Market in Baclaran, Pasay and Bellagio Square in Malate, Manila.

Lastly, those in Metro Manila may also avail of Oktoberfest 2019’s merch collection from the comforts of their homes when they order Andok’s Liempo or Litson Manok and 6 bottles of SMB via Grab Food every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until October 27.

Luzon

Outside Metro Manila, San Miguel Oktoberfest 2019 celebrations will also be held in various locations in North and South Luzon. From Ilocos, Pampanga, and Subic to Laguna, Cavite, Quezon, and Batangas.

Northerners may visit Venvi IT Park in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte; Sitio Foodpark in Vigan; Nepo Quad Jr in Angeles City. Those near Subic can enjoy Oktoberfest by the beach at the Pier One Moonbay Marina.

San Miguel Oktoberfest along with Karpos Media will also be presenting La Union Surfing Break on October 25 - 27. The entrance is free!

In Laguna, you can visit Centro Mall Food Park in Cabuyao and Locale Food Lounge in Sta Rosa.

Photo from Locale Food Lounge’s FB page

Caviteños may visit Inbox Food Hub in Imus. A food park which, like The Pop Up, repurposes old container vans as food kiosks.

Further south, you can visit Dayton Food Park in Lipa City, Batangas and Party Central at Ellireys, Lucena, Quezon.

Visayas

Oktoberfest 2019 is also celebrated in the Visayas region as various locations in Cebu, Iloilo, and Bacolod will be participating in the fest.

Two Oktoberfest venues in Cebu will be the green lifestyle center IT ParkGarden Bloc and Tambayan Sa Lacion in Mandaue. While those in Iloilo can visit Central Park and enjoy the Beerkada Nights party at MO2 on October 18.

Bacolod, on the other hand, will be owning its moniker as the “City of Smiles” this year, as they will have 3 areas for their Oktoberfest events. Namely, The Palms, CGC Foodzone, and The Marketplace.

Mindanao

Those looking to experience Oktoberfest by the sea can do so by traveling to Iligan City.

Paseo de Santiago is a relatively new tourist destination in Iligan City where visitors often take photos with their huge “Iligan City” sign. The seaside complex is also close to the city fish market and its dampa.

Photo from Paseo de Santiago’s FB page

The place prides itself as the perfect location for friends and family to chill, with good food and drinks, while taking in the sea breeze.

Other Mindanao locations for San Miguel Oktoberfest include Matina Town Square and Brick Lane Square in Davao, Lifestyle District in Cagayan de Ora, and Yubengco Tetuan in Zamboanga.

Last reminders

To anyone who’s attending the San Miguel Oktoberfest 2019 events, you are advised to arrive early. Due to the large foot traffic, the venues are strictly at a “first come, first served” basis.

Schedules, including performer line-ups, are also subject to change without prior notice. You can check the San Miguel Oktoberfest Facebook page or App for updates.

Lastly, Oktoberfest is a time to put down one’s gadgets and bond with friends face-to-face. So everyone, feel free to take your time. Don’t rush the night and just enjoy the festivities. – Rappler.com

Smart to roll out Google Station, interactive tourism markers in Intramuros, Rizal Park

[Editor's note: Will free wi-fi boost tourism in Manila? Below is the press release from Smart Communications.]

MANILA, Philippines – PLDT wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has signed an agreement with the Intramuros Administration (IA) and the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) to boost tourism in the City of Manila by rolling out free wi-fi services via Google Station in key public areas inside the Walled City and Rizal Park.

Smart and its technology partner InnoPub Media are also working with the Intramuros Administration to roll out interactive tourism markers powered by QR codes and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology as part of its nationwide Digital Tourism Program. The markers and the newly released Intramuros Administration mobile application aim to promote historical and cultural tourism by providing tourists relevant information using one of the most important travel tools of today – the smartphone.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, PLDT chief revenue officer and Smart president Alfredo S. Panlilio, and PLDT Enterprise head Juan Victor I. Hernandez graced the signing ceremonies recently held at the Manila Hotel. Also at the ceremonies were IA administrator Atty Guiller B. Asido and NPDC Executive Director Cecille Lorenzana-Romero.

Under the agreement, Smart will deploy fast, free and open wi-fi connectivity via Google Station at the Plaza Dilao, Casa Manila, Museo de Intramuros, Plaza Roma, and Fort Santiago, as well as across Rizal Park.

“We are happy to partner with government to further enhance its ability to deliver quality services for the Filipino people through connectivity, and to contribute to efforts in preserving history and making historical information more accessible to everyone,” said Panlilio.

“This partnership with the Department of Tourism, Intramuros Administration and the National Parks Development Committee is a testament to PLDT-Smart’s commitment to boosting the Philippine tourism industry,” said Hernandez. “We look forward to helping Secretary Puyat and the DOT in their tourism efforts across the country.”

“Connectivity is vital to enhancing the tourist experience. With high quality connectivity,
tourists are easily able to share to the world the sights and sounds of our country, keep in touch with their loved ones abroad, and learn more about our historical and heritage sites by downloading information through our interactive digital markers,” he added.

Once up, these venues will join the growing list of the more than 400 Google Station venues around the country announced by Smart and Google Philippines earlier this year. Google Station is also available in other heavy foot-traffic areas such as airports and other transportation hubs like bus stations and seaports, hospitals, and malls across the country.

The digital tourism program is a project of Smart and InnoPub Media in collaboration with various stakeholders such as DOT, NCCA, local government units, tourism offices, and dioceses. Launched in 2012 in Cebu, it has been implemented in Antique, Baguio City, Bicol Region, Davao, and Metro Manila, among other areas.

The nationwide rollout of Google Station complements Smart’s ongoing network expansion and modernization program across the Philippines.

For 2019, PLDT capex is expected to reach P78.4 billion, including allocations for the expansion of PLDT’s fiber broadband service, which also supports Smart’s mobile network by providing high-capacity links for cellular base stations. – Rappler.com

HELPING COMMUNITIES. This year's Global Handwashing Day aims to visit communities that aren't often reached by sanitation and healthcare advocacy groups. All photos by Alecs Ongcal/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Did you know that aside from giving you protection from infectious diseases, washing your hands can also make other people happier?

A global survey says that clean hands can increase life satisfaction. 8 in 10 respondents said that knowing other people wash their hands makes them more willing to interact with others.

Manila Water Foundation (MWF) wants to instill this good hygiene habit to communities by celebrating Global Handwashing Day last October 15. Held at the Mariano Marcos Memorial High School in Santa Ana, Manila, it drew over 1000 attendees composed of students, parents, and barangay residents who received hygiene kits and were taught the 7 handwashing steps and when it should be practiced.

With the theme, Clean Hands for All, MWF aims to make access to clean water, soap, and proper hygiene education inclusive to all.

“We’re very happy with the turnout of our event, especially that we could see the collaboration among different sectors, from the academe, the local government unit, community, to other social civic organizations,” said Reginald Andal, MWF’s Executive Director.

MWF has been conducting Global Handwashing Day for the past 6 years. Last year, they were able to reach 5 million people through their onsite events and online activities. This 2019, they’re targeting to reach more through the help of private companies such as FamilyDoc

They led a medical mission attending to students, faculty members, and residents in Santa Ana, Manila. Katherin De Leon, FamilyDoc’s Sales and Marketing Manager said they participated in the Global Handwashing Day because they believe in the importance of advocating proper healthcare habits in communities. “Our doctors educate people about preventive health care. They encourage hand washing to prevent them from getting communicable diseases,” she said.

LOCAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. Aside from consultation services, FamilyDoc also conducts vaccination programs in different communities.

Cleene, a brand under Philusa Corporation, was MWF’s official soap sponsor. They have been an avid supporter of MWF for the past 3 years to help educate people on proper handwashing.

Mr. Neogin Evangelista, President and CEO of Philusa, urged the attendees to invest in preventive healthcare. “Kailangan maagap tayo sa kalusugan para di tayo nagkakasakit(We should be proactive about our health so we don't get sick),” he said

Representatives from the local government also took part in the event. Manila Vice-Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan was there to express her support for MWF’s mission to help communities live a healthier life. “It’s important that the government supports the private sector, that there’s unity to fight diseases,” she said.

SETTING AN EXAMPLE. Global Handwashing Day 2019 ambassador, Robi Domingo, shows the 7 steps of proper handwashing at the newly turned over sanitation facility at the school.

Asked about what’s new in this year’s celebration, Andal said that they have more activities. “We consider students, community residents, onsite and online activities. Part of our campaign is the behavioral change communication campaign. We want to make sure that people whom we’re reaching will really have a change in mindset and behavior,” he said.

They also organized a cooking demo led by the teachers to highlight the importance of handwashing when preparing food. For the students: poster-making contest and storytelling activity in partnership with Adarna House.

ENGAGING STUDENTS. MWF chose 3 winners out of the 23 students who joined the poster-making contest.

MWF commits to provide sustainable water access, sanitation and hygiene facilities to marginalized communities in the Philippines so they can help 20 million Filipinos who don’t have access to safe drinking water.

“Our measurement of success is sustainability. After the event will they continue with their old habits or are they going to adapt a new behavior? What we’re really after is embedding the right mindset in communities,” Andal said.

MWF will be closing the month-long celebration of Global Handwashing Day with Aeta communities in Barangay Sapang Uwak in Porac, Pampanga on Tuesday, October 29. – Rappler.com

What’s World Savings Day and why isn’t PH celebrating it?

MANILA, Philippines – What do you celebrate every October 31st? Most Filipinos would probably say Halloween or the day we prepare for Undas [All Souls Day]. But there’s actually another important event that’s being celebrated globally – it’s the World Savings Day.

In a nutshell, World Savings Day is an annual celebration that aims to promote the importance of saving not just to the people themselves but to the country’s economy as well. It’s being celebrated in Austria, Italy, Belgium, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Germany, India, Indonesia, and more.

It may sound new to us but this celebration has started more than 90 years ago. It was first known as “World Thrift Day” and was launched during the International Thrift Congress in Milan. The banks who are behind the campaign worked with schools, offices, and even the church to promote the value of thrift. Apparently, saving has been a problem for many people as early as 1924.

This was mainly because people weren’t confident about saving anymore after World War. Even before the declaration of the World Savings Day, Germany and the United States were already observing their own National Thrift Days to make people feel good about saving again.

The campaign has succeeded so far in developed countries where the majority of people now have their own savings account. In developing countries, however, there’s still work to be done.

In the Philippines alone, 66% of Filipinos don’t have any formal savings account according to the 2017 Global Findex Database by the World Bank Group.

Our reasons why we can’t save doesn’t fall far from that of the people from 90 years ago – we’re not too confident that we can do it. And sometimes there’s shame in admitting that a working person who earns a monthly salary doesn’t have savings.

That’s exactly the reason why GCash, the country’s premier fintech company backed by Alibaba, started the #PlsSaveMe campaign – to encourage people to acknowledge the problem by admitting that they don’t have savings. And also to show that they’re not alone because a lot of people are finding it difficult as well.

“Just like any problem, the first step to change is acceptance,” said Kim Seng, GCash's Assistant Vice President for Financial Services. “When we open the gates of acceptance, then people become less shy to talk about saving. [Talking about] money problems become less of a taboo.”

The #PlsSaveMe campaign revealed that these are people who earn regular (and even higher than average) salaries from stable jobs like art directors, call center agents, HR officers, accounts, and even celebrities.

One of them is Robi Domingo. He confessed that he spent all of the P500,000 prize money he won from a reality show in just one week and that up to now, he still has yet to master the art of keeping a healthy savings account.

But this October 31, GCash is doing the next step after accepting the difficulty of saving money. The company is bringing World Savings Day to the Philippines for the first time ever, in order to help every Filipino to not only realize the value of saving but to actually start saving together with the whole country. So, tune in to Rappler on October 31 for GCash World Savings Day, a very special event that hopes to spark a change in our money habits and allow Filipinos to become part of history.  – Rappler.com

[Editor's note: Vivo's latest flagship phone, the Vivo V17 Pro, boasts six high-quality cameras: 2 in front, and 4 in the rear.  It also features two beautifying features such as the “Pose Master" and Super Night Mode. Below is their press release.]

MANILA, Philippines – Vivo V17 Pro wants Filipinos to discover their own limits and break them. By developing a smartphone with six cameras, the leading global technology company wants photography enthusiasts, even ordinary users, to go beyond their limits.

Front cameras

The Vivo V17 Pro's dual elevating front camera is a combination of a whopping 32MP main selfie camera and an 8MP Super Wide-Angle Selfie lens that can capture wide angles up to 105 degrees.

Social media junkies would definitely love the main selfie camera because the images are sharing-ready with really crisp images. The ultra-wide-angle camera is perfect for group shots but also for selfies to capture breathtaking landscapes in the background.

MAIN SELFIE CAMERA. All photos from Vivo.

Vivo V17 Pro's elevating selfie camera also allows for a bezel-less screen which makes the display perfect for watching videos and playing games.

Rear cameras

Vivo believes that users should bring just one accessory, so it equipped the Vivo V17 Pro with four more cameras in the rear.

The 48MP main camera has a Sony sensor, 1/2” sensor size, and a large F1/8 aperture while the 8MP super wide-angle camera allows you to shoot beyond limits. A 2MP Super Macro camera allows you to shoot the little details in crisp color and sharp images. Truly, there is no subject that you won't be able to capture with the rear quad cameras and their fantastic features.

MACRO SHOT

The 48MP camera has embedded AI algorithms that help you take better photos. The smartphone's Super Wide-Angle Camera will make that landscape photo better than anything shot in the past.

REAR CAMERA SHOT WITH WIDE ANGLE

There is no need for stitching apps or constantly switching to the panoramic mode as the ultra-wide-angle lens will let you shoot at your convenience. You cannot miss that one second of capturing the sunrise over the horizon just because it took you a few seconds to shift from normal to another shooting mode.

Vivo’s latest flagship smartphone also features two beautifying features—the “Pose Master” that suggests various poses, and the Super Night Mode feature that solves the perennial problem of shooting in low light.

SUPER NIGHT MODE

The V17 Pro runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 AIE processor with 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM. Its 4100mAh battery, with Dual-Engine Fast Charging Technology, brings higher durability and faster charging that ensures the smartphone provides a long-lasting and safe mobile experience. - Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – For anyone who's had to go through the rigors of a 9-to-6 job, the prospect of retirement is a welcoming one. After all, who wouldn't want to hang up their proverbial hat and enjoy the fruits of their labor? Across contemporary cultures, retirement has become a sort of celebratory milestone, a reward for putting in years of work. However, in the Philippines, retirement doesn’t happen to everybody. Based on the results from a survey, 38% of Filipinos still have a job post-retirement, compared to the global average of 17%.

Enjoying your retirement isn't as easy as it looks. There are a host of things you need to do to get ready for during the later years of your life, not least of which is achieving financial independence.

The terms retirement and financial independence are often used interchangeably. Financial independence basically means that you have enough money to take care of your basic needs that work becomes entirely optional. This money can come from your savings or your income from your pension or investments.

Retirement in the Philippines

Despite its now ubiquitous presence in modern society, retirement as we now understand it is a fairly recent invention. The Roman Empire paid pensions to those who had served in the military, but the modern concept of retirement began sometime in the 18th and 19th centuries. Life expectancies during this period were slowly increasing, and for the first time aging posed an obstacle to work. Governments began to pay pensions to anyone over 65, with contributions being taken from the employee, employer, and government.

In the Philippines, there is no official retirement age, but the House of Representatives recently passed a bill lowering the government retirement age from 60 to 56. House Bill 8683 amends Section 13-A of Republic Act 8291, or the "Government Service Insurance Act of 1997," which now entitles government workers who have reached the age of 56 years to file for retirement and be entitled to an old-age pension from the GSIS. Under the Philippine Labor Code, the default mandatory retirement unless specified is at least 60 years but not over 65 years old.

The Commission on Population (PopCom) estimates that the number of Filipinos aged 60 and above is expected to increase by 8.2% in 2019, up from around 7.5% in 2015. An aging population means that many Filipinos have retirement on their minds. But, are Filipinos ready to retire?

A recent survey found that Filipinos only have about the equivalent of 3.6 months of personal income set aside for retirement, far behind the average of 2.9 years for other Asian countries. The survey also found that Filipinos believe that savings equivalent to 2.1 years of personal savings are enough to retire on, much lower than the regional average of 12 years.

Not preparing properly for retirement is a major problem for Filipinos. A 2015 retirement survey found that 9 in 10 (90%) of Filipinos worry about how to stretch their money during retirement. The country ranks only second to Vietnam (95%) in terms of retirement prospects anxiety. But despite these retirement woes, the survey also found that 55% of Filipinos were optimistic about a higher living standard for each new generation of workers.

A study published in the DLSU Business & Economics Review found that young and middle-aged Filipino adults see old age positively as a mark of achievement, but view living through their old age negatively. This contradiction is caused by worries about income security and social pension and insurance. The study found that despite awareness of the health problems posed by aging, financial planning and preparations for retirement were still removed from their present work-life.

Compare this with the state of things in countries like America, where CNBC reports that retirement savings shortfalls are slowly but surely narrowing. American households are running USD $3.83 trillion short of what they need for retirement, a marked improvement when compared with the USD $4.4 trillion that they lacked in 2014. So what can you do to prepare yourself for the later years of your life? Quite a few things, it turns out.

Saving up

While the outlook for Filipinos approaching retirement age seems dire, it doesn't have to be. With the right preparation and financial planning, you can look forward to a comfortable and worry-free retirement.

The first and most basic thing to do in order to prepare for your life post-work is to simply save up. While the jury is still out on what the exact amount you need for retirement is, most experts agree that saving 10% to 15% of your annual income in your 20s is a good enough baseline.

For those starting a bit late, the percentage jumps up to 50%-60% of your income in your 40s and 50s, so it's best to start early. Instead of splurging on your next big family trip or the newest phone, it's more financially smart to simply set aside a small percentage of your money for the future.

If you're finding it a little difficult to get the ball rolling, you're not alone. According to the Financial Inclusion Survey conducted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), only a fourth of Filipino adults have bank accounts. However, the number of Filipinos who have set aside money for a rainy day is also on the rise, up from 32.5% in the third quarter of 2018 to 32.8% in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Making investments

Another thing that will help you prepare for financial independence is to start investing. Most Filipinos prefer to keep their money in the bank or in small credit cooperatives, without realizing that they can earn far more by investing in the stock market. In fact, according to the BSP, only around 3% of Filipinos currently invest in stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.

Why the low number? For many Filipinos, lack of knowledge, lack of funds, and fear of the risks may be the main factors. But the benefits of investing are huge, and a little bit of research can go a long way.

For example, by investing in stocks you can combat the effects of inflation on your money, something that a simple savings account can't do. It's also not necessary to have millions in the bank in order to invest — you can actually start investing with as little as Php 5,000.

More and more Filipinos see the value of investing, and the numbers prove it. The total number of accounts in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) broke past the one million mark in 2018, as more millennials and middle-income earners have begun to invest. Count yourself among them and begin your investment journey today, and your future self will thank you.

Investing in health insurance

Finally, one of the best things you can do to prepare for retirement is to invest in a good health insurance plan. It's no secret that as we age, our bodies grow weaker and more susceptible to diseases and illnesses.

Aging is a complex process that affects many people in different ways, but certain things remain constant no matter who you are. As you age, your cells become larger and less able to divide and multiply. Waste products also begin to build up in your tissues, impacting how your organs operate on a daily basis. Lifestyle related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity begin to surface, as well as other illnesses such as cancer that may have slipped early detection. Your body's healing abilities also become less elastic, requiring longer recovery times and sometimes even hospitalization.

With all these health concerns, the chances for hospitalization increase, and that can put a damper on your retirement savings. Based on a report by the Philippine Statistics Authority, household out-of-pocket payments for healthcare topped at Php 372.8 billion in 2017, 54.5% of current health expenditures (CHE). This is compared with government and compulsory contributory health care financing which had 33%, and voluntary healthcare payment schemes at 12.5%.

As you age, the chances of paying for hospitalization costs increase. In order to protect your health and your savings, it's important to find a health insurance plan that's specifically tailored to your budget and your needs. Paramount Direct's PrimeCare Cash Plan (PCP) is designed specifically for people between 50 to 75 years old with coverage up to 80 years old. It has guaranteed acceptance, so there's no need to spend extra on medical exams. The PCP also offers Daily Cash Benefit, Daily ICU Benefit, and Surgical Cash Benefit, so you can focus on your recovery and not have to worry about lost income during confinement.

You'll also find yourself protected no matter where you are, as the PCP offers coverage anywhere in the Philippines and around the world. With affordable premiums as low as Php 213 per month and coverage amounts specific to your needs, there's no better investment for you and your health.

Enjoying your retirement

The state of life after work in the Philippines is complex and dependent on many factors. Research has shown that Filipinos lack the proper preparation for their retirement years, with many falling short of the required savings amount in order to live comfortably. Many Filipinos are also anxious about their life post-retirement, with many continuing to work even past the normal age of retirement.

Despite this, Filipinos remain optimistic about growing old. And with the right preparation, it is possible to live comfortably in your later years. By saving a percentage of your income each year as early as your 20s and 30s, making smart investments, and putting your money in safety nets like health insurance, you can begin the path to a happy and comfortable retirement.

As a leading global technology company, Vivo is strongly committed to developing ground-breaking innovations anchored on future technologies that would not only provide the best smartphone experience for the user, but would also help set the trend and shape the industry.

Vivo’s NEX 3 smartphone, the latest flagship in its high-end NEX series, does just that as it breaks the limits of present technology with next-generation innovations that go beyond the edge, making it the “device of the future”.

Beyond limits with breakthrough design

In-Display Fingerprint Scanning also allows users to step into their mobile world both instantly and safely.

Premier photo-shooting experience

NEX 3 flexes its photography superiority with a 64-megapixel main camera, 13MP wide-angle camera and a 13MP super macro camera. Making super HD clarity as a standard for all photos, the smartphone’s upgraded camera allows users to capture life’s splendor down to the last detail.

With its 16MP Elevating Front Camera, NEX 3 makes way for the perfect FullView Display, turning every selfie into a unique experience. A purpose-fit motor and customized gear box ensure smooth elevation that operates stably.

Boosting connectivity and power

Powered by Snapdragon 855 Plus with 2.96Hz Octa-core processor, Qualcomm’s first 5G solution, and UFS 3.0 high-speed flash memory, NEX 3 provides top computing performance, smooth multitasking capabilities, ultra-high download speeds (over 1Gbps), ultra-low latency and robust network reliability. The dual WLAN Acceleration technology can use two Wi-Fi signal networks at the same time to greatly boost the network speed and facilitate smoother use.

A 4500mAh battery gives NEX users the fuel to go through their day feeling unrestrained, while Vivo Super FlashCharge 44W and C-DRX power-saving technologies ensure low power is a thing of the past. The Vapor Chamber Cooling System meanwhile supplies power while remaining cool even with heavy 5G usage. NEX 3 is equipped with 8GBRAM/128GB storage and supports global frequency bands and NFC.

Go beyond artificial intelligence

Vivo’s AI assistant, Jovi, has been upgraded to enable a fully intelligent flagship experience based on the Vivo Computation Acceleration Platform (VCAP). The platform offers AI algorithms for software optimization and enhanced user habit learning for deeper AI integration – providing an impressive speed boost with a personalized experience.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – May boyfriend ka na? Kailan ka mag-aasawa?Baka tumandang dalaga ka. (Do you have a boyfriend? When are you getting married? You might end up as an old maid.)

Here in the Philippines, we’re used to our aunts and uncles asking us about our relationship status. While most of them mean well, they make it seem like being single is miserable. A lot of celebrations associated with relationships such as bachelor parties, engagement parties, and Valentine’s day don’t help either.

MANILA, Philippines – While others were busy trick or treating last October 31, another event was being celebrated by Filipinos who admit that in terms of financial stability, they were in need of saving – the first ever World Savings Day in the Philippines.

World Savings Day is an annual celebration that aims to promote the importance of saving. It’s being celebrated in the US, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Germany, India, Indonesia, and more.

(READ: What’s World Savings Day and why isn’t PH celebrating it?)

Now that it’s here in the Philippines, GCash, the country’s premier fintech company and a joint venture of Ant Financial, Globe Telecom, and Ayala Corporation, made sure that it was a day to remember. And it was indeed.

In partnership with GIGIL, an ideas company, and Rappler, GCash celebrated World Savings Day with a full day of activities that aimed to help Filipinos acknowledge their financial struggles and start addressing these through the help of GCash app's newest feature, Save Money, powered by CIMB Bank Philippines, an all-digital multi-awarded bank present in 16 global markets.

(READ: GCash’s #LetsSaveTogether campaign urges Filipinos to kickstart their saving habit)

GCash Save is just the right first step that Filipinos need in order to start saving. You only need the GCash app, one valid ID, and as small as P1.00 to open a savings account. Compared to other traditional banks, your savings on GCash Save Money can earn as much as 3% interest, and grows to 4% interest with deposits above P25,000 as well.

And half a million Filipinos did just that throughout the GCash World Savings Day livestream hosted by Ceej Tantengco and Jutt Sulit where thousands of Filipinos were tuned in. Lucky savers also got to win an iPhone 11, two pairs of roundtrip tickets to anywhere in the Philippines, and five Huawei Nova 5 smartphones.

“We are looking at making sure that this habit carries on beyond this day. It’s really about making the Filipinos aware that it’s actually easy and very rewarding to be saving,” said Lester Cruz, Head of Consumer Banking, CIMB Bank Philippines.

(WATCH: GCash World Savings Day celebration)

Not only that, the viewers also got to learn from GCash ambassadors Robi Domingo, Angelica Yap, and Ricci Rivero who all shared their own financial struggles and those crucial moments when they realized that they, too, need to start saving.

For Fighting Maroon Ricci Rivero, fighting to save used to be a losing battle.

We also heard from Orange Conde, a digital executive; Robi Domingo, host and actor; and Kim Seng, AVP for Financial Services at GCash during a roundtable discussion on the savings landscape in the Philippines.

Robi Domingo wasn’t so good with money when he was first starting out in showbiz, spending P500,000 in just 1 week.

We also visited some of the partner offices who are on-board this savings movement including Shakey’s, Lalamove, Transportify, Focus, Inc. in Davao, Sunlife, and of course, GCash.

Quad X, Admerex, Ayala Land, Alveo, Amaia, Bellavita, Makati Development Corp., FooDee Global Concepts, Memo Express, GIGIL, Concentrix, Bench, MSIA Employee Development Corp., and Globe Telecom have also partnered with GCash to push for this advocacy.

GCash employees are on the right track to financial independence.

The Philippines will now be celebrating GCash World Savings Day together with the world every October 31 until every Filipino is saved.

“This is just the beginning. The vision really is to change the story of the savings behavior and the stories of the Filipino people that we have been seeing online,” said Seng. “We are very hopeful that this will change through this partnership with GCash and CIMB Bank Philippines.” Rappler.com

LOLO GREG AND LOLA EMY CIRCA '69

MANILA, Philippines – “Back when I was a kid, I thought all restaurants were take-out counters—the kind where you ordered by knocking on the kitchen back door.”

Growing up, my father often shared with us stories of his impoverished youth. It’s one of those things that, now in adulthood, I feel bad laughing at as a kid. But you know, at the time, they were these sorts of stories that became an inside joke between us siblings. How our Debby Downer of a dad would always find a way to add a sad punchline to any situation by sharing how these mundane comforts we barely thought about were alien luxuries in his day.

There’s the story of how he thought breakfast cereals were tsitsirya (basically eaten like kornik). There’s also how—and this was before green salads were a thing—he unintentionally surprised my mom by making a bagoong and kangkong salad when she was expecting something closer to potato or macaroni. “It was the only ‘salad’ I was familiar with,” he told us.

The irony of things is that, while he often shared these sadly comedic anecdotes of his life, they would often come with a juxtaposition. He would also tell us of the affluence of his Chinese grandfather. “For a time, he had the tallest house in all of Tuguegarao!” “Our family could have owned half of Tuguegarao if only he accepted all those land titles as loan collaterals.”

A large part of my father’s humble beginnings stemmed from how he was the first-born of a forbidden marriage. His mother, my grandmother, was a near 100% Chinese woman, born of a mainlander and an Aparri-raised tsinay, who married a pure Ybanag kutsero-turned-teacher. And she was disowned because of this.

“Langit ka, lupa ako”

My grandparents’ love story is that of the typical meeting of two worlds.

My grandmother was the first-born of a prominent Chinese businessman in Tuguegarao. Even amongst the wealthy Chinese in the province, he held a certain distinction. He was the president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, he owned multiple businesses, and he sort of functioned as the godfather-type in Tuguegarao, whom those with problems in the Tsinoy community often turned to.

I’m reminded of Grease whenever I’d hear descriptions of how my grandparents were back. My Lola Emilia was prim-and-proper, bespectacled, bright, and ultra-religious. When she’d leave the house, she had an assistant who followed her with an umbrella and would hail rides for her.

My Lolo Greg (short for Gregorio), on the other hand, grew up poor but was quite the rough-around-the-edges charmer. Like his father, he was a kutsero (kalesa coachman). Yet he also had the body of a dancer, showcasing his folk dancing skills in schools, smooth-talking women along the way. (Based on the stories, he was quite popular.)

Their paths would soon cross once my grandfather was hired as the CAT instructor in the school where my grandmother was teaching Physics. Back then, there was no dating for Lola Emy. Guakong would only allow suitors who were 1) Chinese and (not or) 2) successful. Neither of which my grandfather was.

My grandparents' coupling is something we’re still baffled by to this day. One is cordial and will draw you into hour-long stories, whether you like it or not. The other is quiet, analytical, and reticent. Needless to say, after a year, my grandparents traveled to Manila and got married in secret.

Their marriage would cause outrage in Tuguegarao and it only had guama’s blessing, my father would tell me. And true enough, she was shunned by her father for it.

Left to their own devices and without a home to go back to, they raised their family in whatever small home they could rent. The shadow of our guakong's towering home loomed over them both literally and figuratively—as the three-story mansion did stand out amongst the mostly bungalow homes in Tuguegarao. It was only our guama who maintained contact with our grandmother.

My grandparents, however, along with my father and his siblings, would eventually end up living in the house of our guakong after some time. Albeit, it was in the weirdest of arrangements. One which wasn't a gesture of reconciliation but one of convenience.

My grandmother’s only brother—who was the one living with our guakong and guama back then—moved to Manila to start his own family. Aging and without company, our guama invited my grandmother to live with them. Though in the same house, there were still literal divisions in their living arrangement.

My father’s family had to eat at a different dining table, one in the middle of the house’s storage room. They also had their own separate food, one which was mostly composed of vegetables our grandfather farmed in their backyard, while our great-grandparents feasted on adobo and lugaw.

“We didn’t even have enough money for rice, we ate boiled corn,” my dad would tell me.

My father would soon move out of the province at the age of 12, after getting into Philippine Science High School. And my grandfather would become an OFW during the first wave of Saudi migrant workers.

Aftershocks

I’d love to say that this story ended with a grand gesture, a mahjong game similar to that scene in Crazy Rich Asians, where the outsider gains the favor of the conservative head of the family by a cinematic display of worthiness. But it doesn’t.

It isn’t even a story of warming up through time. Life just continued. At the end of his life, our guakong spoke to our grandfather from time-to-time, but I wouldn’t classify it as a friendship nor a familial bond. It was just something that they eventually had to do.

There’s no story of a surprise inheritance—and I don’t think it was much of a surprise that my grandparents weren’t left with much. My grandfather was able to support his family by working in the Middle East. However, this was already well into my father’s college years, after he got a DOST scholarship at the De la Salle University.

Whenever I see my father, and the person he is today (and this may also affect the person I am today), I think our grandparent’s choice to love no matter what still has aftershocks 60 years after.

My own father’s love language is built upon acts of sacrifice. Being the first-born, even though un-required, he took it upon himself to do what it takes to secure a better future for his siblings.

He had to leave his family at an early age for a better education. He had to forego the long-process of building a career as a chemical engineer (which, until this day, he wishes he took the boards for) for a sales job that paid better and churned a quicker profit so he could help his family out. And I, in turn, was also raised to equate love with service, to romanticize hardship even though it shouldn’t always be the case.

The economics of love can be tricky. Life is too complex for love to be enough in securing a fairytale ending. Things don’t always end up rosy–and my grandparents, my father and his siblings, and, in some ways, even us, went through a lot of financial hardships. But when it comes to love in its purest form, I do believe it can persist.

PRESENT DAY

My Lolo Greg and Lola Emy are still together until this day, and so are my parents, and so are most of my father’s siblings and their spouses. And though they may not all be aware of it, I’d like to credit my grandparents’ display of love amidst all as the cornerstone of all our definitions of love.

We don’t choose the people we fall in love with. However, the choosing comes when we decide to let love continue.

Like my grandparents, absolutely all of the situations around them beckoned that life would be more comfortable if they went their separate ways. And yet they made a move, chose each other – breaking barriers in the process. Even if it meant a life of hardship and disapproval.

So, for those that do find that special connection, I want to tell you that no, love alone cannot sustain a relationship. Love cannot conquer all. But it’s the people that choose love, and the choices they make, that must do the conquering.

Love isn’t just a feeling. It is mutually choosing to be with a person despite all...even if it means, in the case of my grandparents, never getting to cross that “Great Wall.” – Rappler.com
